German Ornithological Society e.V.
The German Ornithological Society (DOG) has stood for scientific excellence, openness, and responsibility since 1850. From a fascination with the world of birds, a vibrant community has grown that creates knowledge, takes responsibility, and connects people. Our mission statement makes it clear that we are far more than a professional society: we promote research, create opportunities for exchange, and bring insights into the world—inspired by tradition, curiosity, and a shared взгляд into the future.
Why is the Bluethroat the emblem bird of the DOG?
In 1987, at the annual meeting in Hildesheim, the Bluethroat was designated the heraldic bird of the DOG at the initiative of then President Prof. Dr. Klaus Schmidt-Koenig. He had already published a widely acclaimed paper on this species in 1956 and incorporated his enthusiasm into the design of the new logo.
Mission Statement
Tasks and Objectives
The German Ornithological Society (DOG) promotes research into the world of birds in all its facets. Our goal is to expand knowledge about birds and their role in the ecosystem and to connect insights from a wide range of disciplines. Since our founding in 1850, we have stood for scientific excellence and are committed to better understanding and protecting the fascinating diversity of bird species.
Networking and academic exchange
DOG is a platform for the transfer of knowledge and professional networking within the ornithological community. Our conferences enable the exchange of ideas on current research, promote new collaborations, and provide space for discussion and ideas. At the same time, personal interaction is also important to us—for a collegial atmosphere that strengthens the community.
Education and the Public
Promoting ornithological knowledge among the public and supporting emerging scientists are matters of particular importance to us. Through our research funding, specialist groups, and events, we spark interest in the world of birds and raise awareness of the importance of species conservation. We support young scientists with scholarships, mentoring opportunities, and access to an active network.
Scientific Standards and Ethics
Our work is guided by the highest scientific standards and ethical principles. The DOG stands for responsible research, transparency, and openness. We follow the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for good scientific practice (www.dfg.de/gwp).
