Special Interest Group
DNA Analysis
Objectives of the Special Interest Group
More and more questions in the fields of ecology, physiology, and evolution of birds can now be answered better—or in some cases only—with the help of molecular genetic analyses. For amateur ornithologists and conservation organizations, this is often still like a book with seven seals, or they do not have the corresponding analytical methods at their disposal. But even professional ornithologists at museums and universities can sometimes scarcely keep pace with the rapid advances in laboratory techniques and bioinformatic evaluation methods.
The target group includes all persons who work on, or would like to work on, ornithological questions using nucleic acid analyses (DNA, RNA). The goals of the SIG are to network the stakeholders, provide mutual support, organize methods workshops, and, if applicable, carry out joint research projects.

Meetings and Events
The FG has already met several times for methods workshops at the universities in Heidelberg and Bielefeld. Informal meetings also usually take place at the DOG annual general meetings. At the DOG Annual Meeting 2024 in Vienna, a session block entitled “DNA” was organized.
Participation
Any DOG member can join the working group. If you are interested, please send us a message or contact the spokesperson of the working group. We look forward to hearing from you!
