The SG Woodpeckers brings together experts and interested ornithologists of all ages. It is a platform for exchanging observations, research results and practical experience in habitat and species conservation.  We want to stimulate discussion, share knowledge and inspire each other for further projects. Everyone with an interest in and enthusiasm for woodpeckers in the German-speaking countries or worldwide is very welcome!

Main topics

The Specialist Group Woodpeckers covers a wide range of topics relating to woodpeckers and their habitats, including:

  • ecological research on space and habitat use, breeding biology, feeding ecology, survival and behaviour

The 2027 annual meeting of the Specialist Group Woodpeckers of the Deutsche Ornithologische Gesellschaft will take place from Friday, 19 March, to Sunday, 21 March 2027, in Blaubeuren (Baden-Württemberg).

The Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve with its extensive beech forests and orchard meadows provides the setting for the upcoming woodpecker conference. The main topics are the habitats of cavity trees and orchard meadows. The programme of talks begins on Friday afternoon and ends on Saturday evening. A pre-conference excursion is planned for Friday, and the conference will close with an excursion on Sunday morning.

In addition to the main topics, contributions on implementation projects and practical conservation measures are welcome. The programme is complemented by the established section "All about woodpeckers" and poster contributions.

Local organisation is in the hands of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve and the specialist group members Luis Sikora and Paul Mann. Preparations are already in full swing. Further information on the programme, venue, accommodation and registration will follow soon.

Meetings and events

We meet once a year on a weekend in spring for our woodpecker conference, a joint exchange with scientific talks. A special highlight are the excursions that take us to special places such as protected areas or sites of high conservation value, offering the opportunity for practical exchange. An informal meeting occasionally takes place on the sidelines of the DO-G Annual Convention. About every five years we organise international English-language conferences with participants from all over the world. In August 2024 the international conference took place in Puerto Iguazú (Argentina).
