Specialist Group
Ornithological Collections
Aims of the specialist group
The specialist group brings together both collection staff and people interested in ornithological collections. We see ourselves as a network and forum for exchange on all collection-related topics and, through our activities, want to arouse interest in bird collections and promote their visibility as a contemporary research resource. We want to highlight perspectives for future scientific use, advance studies on the history of collections and carry out concrete specialist work in the form of joint projects. The book "Vögel vermessen – Measuring birds" is a product of the specialist group. We also initiate the awarding of the DOG's Maria Koepcke Prize. We welcome everyone who, like us, has a soft spot for collections and would like to get involved in the specialist group.
Main topics
- Exchange on current developments (collection protection, ABS/Nagoya Protocol, shipping guidelines, preparation and conservation techniques, sampling of specimens, collection relocations, colonial heritage, research and exhibition projects, etc.)
- The future of collecting and of collections
- Taking over or rescuing collections
- Support and training for staff in collections of all sizes, advice for newcomers to the field
- Maintaining an up-to-date overview of ornithological collections in the German-speaking countries
- New edition of the book "Vögel vermessen – Measuring birds"
Meetings and events
We usually meet twice a year. A spring meeting usually takes place in February/March at one of the German bird collections, or online if required. We meet a second time during the DOG Annual Convention.
Quick exchange takes place via a mailing list.
