2019
Award Recipient: Prof. Emeritus Dr. Bruno Bruderer

Laudatory Address

Prof. Emeritus Dr. Bruno Bruderer receives the 2019 Ornithologist Award from the German Ornithological Society for his diverse and groundbreaking studies on bird migration, particularly those utilizing radar technology.

His outstanding work demonstrates, among other things, how streams of migratory birds cross the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the North African deserts, and what strategies the birds employ to accomplish these enormous feats. We owe a significant portion of our knowledge about bird migration to the milestones set by Bruno Bruderer and his colleagues.

In addition to his relentless thirst for knowledge and his ability to make the complex behavior of migratory birds accessible and appealing to the general public, he has distinguished himself as a brilliant scientist and long-time head of the Department of Bird Migration at the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach, as well as through his tenure as a visionary president of the ALA, the Swiss Society for Ornithology and Bird Conservation.
