Honorary Member 2016
Hans-Ulrich Peter
committees of the DO-G, his special commitment as a defining link between East and West after the reunification of Germany, his intensive support of young ornithologists, and his wide-ranging scientific contributions, especially in polar ecology.
Laudation
At its general meeting on 1 October 2016 in Stralsund, the DO-G appointed Dr. Hans-Ulrich Peter an honorary member. Hans-Ulrich Peter has held, or has held, many offices in the DO-G. From 1997 to 2005, he was a member of the advisory board, and from 2013 to 2015 one of the two vice presidents. For many years, he has been a member of the Research Committee and for a long time also served as its spokesperson. He was also spokesperson for the Polar Ecology Section for many years. In 1998, he organized the DO-G annual meeting in Jena. But Hans-Ulrich Peter has also provided the DO-G with significant personnel support in other ways: he was a mentor to several younger officeholders in the DO-G. Hans-Ulrich Peter earned particular merit as a link between East and West immediately after reunification. This contributed significantly to ornithologists finding a common home in the DO-G very quickly. Mr. Peter has also made an important scholarly contribution to the DO-G: for a quarter of a century, many talks and posters have regularly come from his working group, and at the time this issue of "Vogelwarte" is being published, he is shortly before his 27th expedition to Antarctica.
