Specialist Group
Birds of Towns and Settlements
Aims of the specialist group
The specialist group sees itself as a platform for all (amateur and professional) ornithologists who are dedicated to studying birdlife in the "city" habitat. In addition to gathering knowledge from basic research, our aims are above all the recognition of the city as a habitat in its own right, the creation and protection of urban habitats and the application of our findings to nature and species conservation.
Main topics
- Advantages and disadvantages of urban life for birds (food supply, predation, stress from anthropogenic influences, the city as an ecological trap)
- Relationship between urban birds and people, conflicts between birds and people, causes of problems
- Protection of building-nesting birds during renovation, securing nesting sites
- Dangers from glass panes, traffic and litter
Meetings and Events
The specialist group meets online two to three times a year and in person once or twice a year, with one meeting taking place at the annual general meeting. Exchange also takes place via a Signal group and by email distribution list through the specialist group address voestausie@gmx.de.
